Career

The company structure of Rashmirathi Photonics is based on the Gurukul system, an ancient Indian education system. Unlike modern education systems, the Gurukul system focusses on the holistic development of the student through personalized mentorship and a strong student-teacher bond.

The objective is to help the student to discover and become the best versions of themselves, which is unique to each individual. This necessarily requires one-on-one interaction between the student and teacher because the mentorship style and projects assigned will be tailored to each research assistant’s individual aptitude and interests.

In this spirit, the company structure of Rashmirathi Photonics involves one Principal Investigator (Karan Mehta) and 1-3 junior research assistants at a time. Each research assistant can stay for 3-4 years, after which they are encouraged to go on their own independent adventures. The self-knowledge gained during their tenure at Rashmirathi Photonics should enable them to confidently make future career decisions.

Full-time openings at Rashmirathi Photonics are for early-career researchers (PhD or research-based master’s) with prior experience in at least one of photonics design, fabrication, and testing. Positions for internships are also available for PhD graduates with relevant experience in photonics, with each internship spanning a minimum of 6 months.

I cannot accept applicants with no prior experience in photonics, because Rashmirathi Photonics is a business and not a university. Yes, teaching is a part of my job, but I cannot afford to teach people from zero. That is the job of universities, while Rashmirathi Photonics is more of a finishing school for those who want to work on problems which are relevant to industry.

If such a system of training sounds appealing to you, please send an email to karan.mehta@rashmirathi-photonics.com with your CV, your areas of expertise in photonics, and a personalized statement of purpose expressing what you want to learn or achieve during your time at Rashmirathi Photonics.

Please write your application essay in your own words without the help of any AI tool. I understand that English may not be the first language for many Indian applicants. This is not a problem, because writing skills can be taught, and I shall help research assistants with editing over the course of their tenure at Rashmirathi Photonics.

Bad habits formed by regular use of AI, such as intellectual laziness and lack of practice with honing original thoughts, are far harder for me to remedy in future employees than a mere deficiency in writing skills.
